Chapter 19: The Vote
At noon the next day, the carriers came up the nine hundred steps.
There were forty of them again.
Xiu had run down to Willow Ford in the night with her mended roots and fetched back the twenty who had left.
Every one of them came up the west face with a bucket in each hand.
They walked across the summit in a line, past the spirit pool and the Stone Yard, to the doors of the Elders' Hall.
Inner disciples came out of every building to watch them pass.
Nobody tried to turn them back this time.
The head carrier led them in and stopped in front of the long black table.
"Where do you want them?" she asked Lian.
"On the floor," said Lian, from the ninth chair. "Where the elders can see."
The carriers set their buckets down in rows across the polished floor.
Lian's second self had brought the bones up out of the well all night, a bucketful at a time.
The carriers had washed every one of them at the pump below the sheds before dawn.
The head carrier tipped the first bucket gently onto its side.
Small skulls rolled out onto the floor.
Along the walls, the inner disciples stopped whispering.
