Chapter 21: The First Carrier

"I'm not here for her," Guan Shuo said. "I'm here for me."

Lian didn't move out of the doorway.

Behind her, she heard Zhuo Ming sit up in the bed.

"Say it from there, then," she said.

Guan Shuo looked down at his own bare arms in the gray light.

"When I was twelve, Grandmother had me tested on the Root Stone in private," he said.

"Everyone thought it was an honor for her grandson."

"The light died at the bottom. She sent the testing elder out of the room."

"That night she brought me a ladle of ash herself, and held my head while I screamed."

He said it flatly.

"She told me she'd done the same at twenty, and look where it had taken her."

"The carrier girl the stone got wrong," Lian said.

"There was never a second test." He almost laughed. "She wrote that story the year she took the seat."

"She wrote the well law the same year."

"Why?"

"Because any girl who found the ash on her own could climb the way she had," he said.
