Chapter 14: No

I lay in my bed on Thursday night with the light off and my door unlocked, and I listened to the stairwell.

The bar had closed at one. I had walked home alone with my key in my fist, and I had not turned the lock.

Every creak in the building was him.

A neighbour's tap. The lift. A pipe in the wall.

At ten past three, a step came up the last flight and stopped outside my door.

My heart went so hard that it hurt.

The handle turned.

I did not breathe.

The door opened and shut, softly, and the dark in the room got heavier.

He did not say my name.

I sat up and screamed.

It was a real scream, high and raw, and a hand came down over my mouth before it finished.

"Quiet," said Auguste.

I bit him.

I got my teeth into the meat of his palm and tasted salt, and he swore low and hit me across the ribs, open-handed, hard enough to knock the air out of me.

The shock of it rang through my whole side.

I kicked, and my heel caught his shin.

"Get out," I said. "Get out, please, I'll call someone."

"Call them."

He caught my ankle and hauled me down the bed by it, and the sheet tore free of the mattress.

I clawed at his coat, his sleeve, his face.

I got a fist in his hair and he drove me flat on my back with a forearm across my collarbone.

"No," I said. "No. Please, no, don't."

"Louder."

"No!"

He pinned both my wrists above my head in one hand.

His other hand dragged my nightshirt up to my neck, and cold air hit my bare breasts and the rest of me, because I had worn nothing under it.

"You came to bed ready," he said against my ear.

"I didn't."

"You're soaked."

He pushed two fingers into me, brutal, with no care at all, and I arched off the bed with a cry that was not acting.

I was wet.

I was so wet that his fingers went in to the knuckle, and the sound of it filled the room.
