Chapter 24: The Key
"Say it, then," Armand said from the wall. "What did you want?"
I sat up in the grey light with the blanket around my shoulders and Dominique's arm still across my waist.
"I wanted someone to stop asking me for the performance," I said. "To let me be quiet, and to know that I could be, and to stay."
Auguste let out a breath through his nose.
"I would have kept hitting you," he said.
"I know."
"I would have counted," said Armand. "Until sunrise."
"I know that too."
"And I would have put you in the basket," said Léon, "and loved you for it."
"Yes."
I looked at all three of them.
I loved them, in three different ways, and I had known from the first night that I would.
"I'm not choosing between you," I said. "I'm choosing who holds the key."
Léon dug in his coat pocket and found the little brass key to the collar's lock.
He held it out in his palm.
"Whose?"
"Dominique's," I said. "For the things I'd be afraid to ask for."
Dominique went very still behind me.
"Elise."
"You don't tell me what to want. You hold what I give you. When I go quiet, you decide if I need more, or less, or to be held. The others play with me, and they ask you first."
"They'll hate that," Dominique said quietly.
"I do not hate it," said Armand.
"I am not pleased," said Auguste. "I will live."
"I'd ask her myself," said Léon, "and she would say yes."
"Then they ask you both," I said. "And you say yes or no. And I get to slap the table."
Dominique laughed, suddenly, low in his chest, and pressed his face into my hair.
I took the key from Léon and put it into Dominique's hand.
He closed his fingers around it.
