Chapter 5: Pass Revoked

On Friday afternoon I walked up to the backstage gate with my pass around my neck.

It was the same laminated pass I had worn for five years, with my photo and the word FAMILY printed under it.

The security guard at the gate was a big man whose badge had a number and no name.

He looked at my pass, then at his tablet, and did not lift the rope.

"Ma'am, I'm sorry. This one's been deactivated."

"By who?"

"The artist's management." He scrolled. "It says, 'Not cleared for Saturday. Escort off property if she attempts access.'"

Behind him the crew was setting up monitors, and a few of them had turned their heads.

I kept my voice even. "I'm his wife."

"I understand, ma'am."

"Then call him down here."

The guard keyed his radio. Two minutes later Brandon came across the grass with Piper beside him and a man in a label jacket one step behind.

"Lydia," Brandon said. His voice was gentle and carrying. "Sweetheart, you shouldn't be here. You know what the doctor said about stress."

"What doctor?"

"Your therapist. The one you stopped seeing."

I had never had a therapist.

The label man glanced at his phone. Two of the crew stopped coiling cable.

"Brandon, what are you doing?"

"Looking after you." He put a hand on my arm. "Your mom called me. She says you've been sleeping three hours a night, you've been accusing Piper of things, you wandered the grounds yesterday morning alone."
