Chapter 8: Say My Name

At seven that evening, five thousand people stood in the grass in front of the main stage.

I stood in the wings with my hands in the pockets of my coat, waiting for my cue.

Brandon had come off the first half already soaked in sweat and happy.

He did not look at me.

On the other side of the stage Piper stood in a cream dress with her hair curled, holding a microphone in both hands.

Margo had found me a stool to rest on, and she stood behind it like a guard.

"You don't have to go out there," she said.

"I know."

"I'll walk you out the back right now. I'll drive you myself."

"I know, Margo."

Gideon was at the edge of the dark with his arms folded and his guitar slung behind him.

He said nothing at all.

He only met my eyes and nodded once.

The emcee's voice came over the speakers. "And now, a very special moment, for the biggest song of Brandon Keats's career."

The crowd roared.

Brandon walked out into the lights and took the microphone from its stand.

"Thank you, Nashville," he said. "This next one changed my life."

Cheering.

"I want you to meet someone." He held out his hand toward Piper. "The incredible woman who wrote this song with me. My partner on this record. Piper Lund."

My whole body went cold, and then it went still.

He had not even waited to see if I would walk out.

Piper came forward with her hand over her heart, glittering, and the crowd applauded her.
