Chapter 10: The Friend Who Said Wife

That night someone knocked on the door of the Linden Street apartment.

Allie looked through the peephole. "It's one of the groomsmen."

She meant from my wedding.

He was one of Ross's oldest friends, tall and soft in the middle.

His face always looked like it was apologizing for something.

He was also the one who had said, through a closed door, "Because you have a wife."

I knew his voice the moment he spoke.

"Cora," he said, standing in the hall with his hands jammed in his jacket. "I'm not here for Ross."

"Then why are you here?"

"Because somebody filmed you at the library, and it's all over our group chat."

He swallowed. "And because I haven't slept since Friday."

Allie looked at me.

I opened the door.

He sat on the very edge of the green couch.

Allie put a mug of tea in his hands, and he held it without drinking.

"Sabrina wrote to all of us an hour ago," he said.

"Nobody is to talk to you, or to your lawyer, or to anyone who asks about the wedding."

"She said anyone who speaks will never be invited to anything again."

"Invited to what?" Allie said.

"You'd be surprised how much of our lives that is," he said.

For the first time he almost smiled. "That's why I'm here."
