We reached Willow Creek at six thirty-eight, after my husband's wedding had already started.

Allie stopped at the service entrance behind the hotel.

Music drifted across the grass from a glass conservatory before I had the car door open.

"I'll come with you," she said.

"Wait here. I won't be long."

White ribbons marked a path around the back of the hotel.

At the end of it, Sabrina stood under an arch covered in roses.

She wore a real wedding gown, with a train and a veil, and pearls sewn along the neckline.

Fresh flowers were pinned into her hair.

Ross faced her in the charcoal suit from our wedding.

His ring was on his hand, and the silver cufflinks were at his wrists.

I remembered walking toward him five years ago.

He had cried when he saw me, and held my hands so hard during the vows that his ring left a mark on my finger.

Tonight he smiled at Sabrina under a different arch of flowers.

Their friends stood in rows holding champagne.

A photographer moved along the aisle.

A small white cake sat on a table beside a sign printed with two names, and next to it lay a leather register open to a blank page, with a pen on a ribbon.

A man in a canvas work jacket stood at the far end of the path with a clipboard, watching the lawn.

I took him for staff, and I looked away.

I stopped behind the half-open conservatory door.
