Chapter 18: Barracks Yard
The barracks yard was lit with torches, and two hundred men were awake in it.
They were polishing buckles and oiling boots for the dawn parade at Gallows Green.
Nobody looked twice at a laundress in a wet apron crossing the cobbles with a basket on her hip.
The head laundress had pushed the apron into Aveline's arms at the mouth of the drain.
"Walk like you hate every one of them," she had said. "They never stop a woman who looks like that."
It had worked for forty yards.
Then a sergeant with a lantern stepped in front of her.
"You. Where's that basket going?"
"To the captain."
"The captain's not taking washing at this hour."
"He'll take this."
Aveline set the basket down and pulled the pins out of her hair.
The auburn knot fell, and something heavy slid out of it into her palm.
She held up the ring in the torchlight.
The gold caught the flame.
The crowned stag cut into the stone looked back at them all.
