Chapter 19: Gallows Green

They came for her at first light the morning after the wedding that never was, four grey guards and a sergeant with keys.

She had been back in the cell for an hour, with the drain grate shut and her hair braided up again.

Torin's sergeant had slipped the grey betrothal ring, taken from her at the cell door, back through the bars in the night.

"On your feet," the sergeant said, and reached for her arm.

"Don't touch me."

He stopped.

"I'll walk," said Aveline. "You can go in front of me or behind. I'd like to see the sky."

It was a clear morning, the way she had always known it would be.

The crowd on Gallows Green was so thick that she could not see the cobbles.

Thousands of people had come in the dark to see a duke's daughter lose her head.

They stood on carts and window ledges and each other's shoulders, in a roar.

The platform stood in the middle, with a block on it and a man in a black hood leaning on a long axe.

The Queen sat on a covered dais across the square, in white mourning silk, with the little prince at her knee.
