Chapter 12: The Ring in the Dish

Hannah put the phone face down on the counter.

"Well," she said. "That's one problem solved."

Elliott looked up from the table.

"They've taken you off the file."

"They've taken me off the file."

She turned around, and a slow, wicked smile spread over her face.

"I'm not the officer on the report anymore."

"Hannah."

"Nobody can say I did anything wrong."

"Hannah."

She crossed the kitchen and stopped between his knees.

He sat very still.

"Is this pity?" he asked.

"Don't you dare."

"I just want to be sure."

"Elliott."

She took his face in her hands.

"I have wanted to touch you since the night you told me you were fine with a split eyebrow."

He laughed, and it broke off halfway.

Her thumbs moved along his cheekbones, careful around the stitches.

He stood, and she stepped back, and he took her hand and let her lead him down the short hall.

Her bedroom was small and dim, with one lamp on and a quilt that looked handmade.

She pushed the door shut behind them with her foot.

"I should warn you," she said. "I'm out of practice."

"So am I."

"Five years?"

"Not that long. Three years. She stopped touching me in the second year of the marriage."

Hannah's face softened.

She said nothing.

She reached up and slid his shirt over his shoulders.

Her palms moved across his chest very slowly.
