Chapter 13: Section Nine

The label kept its lawyers on the ninth floor, in a conference room with a view of the river and no windows that opened.

Marin sat at the long table at nine on Sunday morning, with her hands flat on the wood.

She had not slept.

She had gone from the Ardmore straight to the label's president, and she had said it all in one breath.

Elliott is my husband. He is not a stalker. I wrote the first post. The song is about him.

The president had listened with his jaw set.

Now he sat at the head of the table with two lawyers, and nobody had offered her coffee.

"You understand what you've told us," the president said.

"Yes."

"Forty-one million streams, and every one of them is built on a man you say you invented."

"I didn't invent him. I married him."

The door opened, and Russ walked in with a folder under his arm.

He did not look angry.

He kissed her on the cheek, and sat down beside her, and she smelled his cologne and wanted to stand up and leave.

"Let's take the temperature down," Russ said. "Marin's had a hard week. She's exhausted, and she's said things."

"I meant every word."

"Of course you did, sweetheart." He opened the folder. "Which is why I want everyone in this room to look at section nine."

One of the lawyers slid a copy across to her.

It was her own contract, signed in a hurry when she was twenty-seven.
