Chapter 6: Paid Leave
On Monday morning Elliott walked into Whitlock and Pierce Architects at ten to nine and every head in the open office turned.
Nobody said a word.
A young designer near the window had her phone face down on her desk, very carefully.
Elliott's own desk was by the plotter, and someone had put a sticky note on his monitor.
It said, Partner wants you. Now.
"I'm coming in with you," Briana said behind him.
"You have a shift."
"I took a personal day. I've never had one. I'm going to enjoy it."
She had come in a nurse's jacket and her best glare, and the receptionist had not dared to stop her.
The senior partner's office was glass on three sides.
He stood behind his desk with his hands flat on it and did not ask them to sit.
"Elliott. Thank you for coming in."
"You called me in."
"I did." He turned his laptop around on the desk. "Have you seen this?"
It was the video from the step.
Elliott, holding the walnut case, with a girl's high voice behind him shrieking that he was the Stage Door Man.
The counter under it had climbed past one million.
"I've seen it."
"Our biggest client's daughter follows that singer," the partner said. "She sent it to her father at seven this morning. He called me at seven-oh-five."
"It's not what it looks like."
"Then tell me what it is."
Elliott opened his mouth.
He had a marriage certificate in an envelope in his car, and a rule he had followed for five years, and four hours of sleep.
