My father's study had boxes in it on Saturday morning.
The shelves of my mother's journals were half empty, and the Istanbul rug was rolled against the wall.
"I'm leaving the house," he said, from behind the desk.
He did not get up.
"It's yours. I signed it over to you at nine, before the lawyer could tell me it was foolish."
"Daddy."
"Your stepmother went to her sister's on Friday night."
"She said she would call when she was ready to be ashamed. She doesn't think it will be soon."
He took off his reading glasses and set them on the blotter.
"I'm resigning my seat on the board too. Effective Monday."
"And I'll testify against Cameron, whenever and wherever they ask."
"You don't have to do that."
"I do," he said. "I really do."
He opened the bottom drawer, and I saw that his hands were not steady.
