Chapter 22: What She Owes
On my twenty-fifth birthday I stood on the lobby stair where I had once woken up with a keycard in my fist.
The bunting was gone, and the banner too.
In their place the board sat in a row of folding chairs, and behind them stood Dot with a lopsided cake, and sixty people from the Lund mill in work boots.
A dozen reporters held up their phones.
My father stood against the back wall, alone, with his reading glasses on their cord.
He had asked to be there, and I had said yes.
On a table beside the stair lay two documents and a notary's brass stamp.
"Shall we begin?" said the chair.
"Yes."
I took the first page and read it aloud.
I read slowly, one line at a time, in the sing-song voice of a child at a spelling bee, and the Lund staff began to laugh.
Even the reporters laughed.
"This assigns an undivided half-interest in the stabilizer patent and every filing from it to Lund Therapeutics," I said.
