Chapter 23: The Cold Room

"You," I said.

He did not breathe.

"I want you, plainly, in Lab 4 tonight, in Room 4C, with the door open."

"I want to go in there with you and walk back out."

Jericho looked at me for a long heartbeat.

Then he came up the three steps in one stride and picked me up.

He kissed me in the middle of the Markham lobby, under the place where the banner had been.

At eleven that night Dot's text came through.

"Code is my mother's birthday. Freezer's been off since Friday. Don't touch my tea tin."

We went up in the dark service elevator without speaking.

My hand was inside his jacket the whole way.

Lab 4 was silent, with the emergency lights burning pale green along the floor.

The door of Room 4C stood open on the grey rubber wedge, and the air coming out of it was warm.

I stopped on the threshold.

The shelves were bare steel.

Dot had run the unit up to seventy degrees.

The thermometer by the door, the one that had read twenty below, said seventy-one.

The red bulb over the frame was dark.

Someone had hung a plain white lamp in its place.
