Chapter 7: Eleven Forty-Seven

I typed "Nine o'clock" and put the phone away before I could think better of it.

The garage under my apartment building was concrete and fluorescent light and the smell of rain on tires.

Level 3 was nearly empty.

A black pickup stood alone in the far corner with its lights off.

Jericho Lund leaned against the door with his arms folded, in a leather jacket.

He straightened when he saw me.

"You came."

"You said please."

"I did." The corner of his mouth moved. "I'd like it noted that I don't say that often."

I stopped three feet from him.

My heels echoed on the concrete.

"Cameron will go after the lawyer first," Jericho said. "Then the general counsel. Then you."

"I know."

"You don't know. You can't."

"Try me."

He looked at me, long and steady, and the fluorescent lights buzzed overhead.

I had been planning this moment for a week, and now that it was here, my heart was going like a hammer.

I took a breath.

"Twenty below," I said.

Jericho did not move.

For one second his face was completely blank.

Then something in it cracked all the way down.

"I remember," he said, and his voice broke in the middle.

I could not breathe.

"I kept talking to you," he said. "My mother's kitchen in Lowell. The first truck I ever fixed."

"I heard some of it," I said. "I couldn't feel my mouth to answer."

"Every minute," he said. "I woke up in my office in Watertown with my coffee going cold."

"I've been going out of my mind for two weeks."

"The ribbon-cutting."

"You looked at me across that lobby," he said, "and you were alive, and I thought I had finally lost it."
