Chapter 11: Sunday Dinner

"I have one rule," I told Rhett in the car outside his mother's house. "If you know something about me or about them, you tell me before I find it out. Every fact, every time."

He looked at the dashboard clock, then at me.

"That's fair."

"It isn't fair. It's a condition."

"Then it's fair," he said. "Agreed."

"Say it back."

"I tell you every fact before you find it out." He held my gaze. "Every time."

I opened my door.

The Ashdown house was a white brick colonial with black shutters and a lawn nobody had ever sat on.

I had eaten there dozens of times in three years, and she had never once let me help with the dishes.

Judith opened the front door herself.

Her smile died when she saw my face.

"You came."

"Rhett invited me," I said.

"I did no such thing," she said, and then she stopped, because he had stepped up beside me.

"I told you to bring nothing."

"She's not nothing, Mother."

The dining room table was set for seven.

My parents sat on one side, stiff in their church clothes.

Tyler sat beside them, staring at his plate.

Clifton's father sat at the far end and did not look up.

Clifton stood behind a chair, and Lydia sat in it, in a pale blue dress, with her hair brushed over one shoulder.

Nobody had put out a place for Rhett, or for me.

"Sit anywhere," Judith said, and she didn't mean it kindly.

Rhett pulled out a chair for me beside my father and took the one next to it.
