Chapter 22: The Real Lantern
The light was so bright that I could not see the faces.
I could only hear the plaza, three thousand people breathing at once.
Lyle turned to me with a small, soft smile.
"Mr. Benton," he said into the microphone. "How kind of you to appear."
Security officers started up the stairs.
I put my hand on the edge of the podium, next to Brant's.
He did not move aside.
"That voice is not Dr. Cunningham's," I said.
"Of course you'd say so."
"I'm not asking you to take my word."
My own voice sounded strange coming back from the loudspeakers, steady and plain.
"I'm asking you to look at the screens."
Behind us, the giant monitors flickered.
A gray waveform filled them, long and ragged, with thin red lines running through it.
Ellen had walked out from the curtain.
She did not hurry, and she did not look at the cameras.
"Each red line is a cut," she said into Brant's microphone. "The analysts matched every word to a different Annex recording, from a different year."
"Dr. Cunningham never said that sentence. Mr. Fitzpatrick built it."
