Chapter 13: What the Dowager Did
Hugh did not answer her.
He walked past her to the chapel door at the end of the yard, pushed it open, and went in.
The Dowager looked at me.
"He will want it said somewhere with a roof," she said.
"Then he will want me to stop."
I held the door for her, because there was nothing else to do with my hands.
The chapel was long and bare, with painted boards on the walls and rows of benches for children.
A light came down from the high windows and lay on the floor.
Hugh stood at the far end with his back to us.
The Dowager lowered herself onto the last bench and set her stick across her knees.
"Sit down, Effie Tapper," she said.
"You have earned the whole of it."
I sat across the aisle.
"Your grandfather chose my son's wife before my son could shave," she said, to Hugh's back.
