Chapter 4: Third Grade

The principal had a box of tissues set out on her desk, square in the middle, aimed at my chair.

I didn't touch it.

"Nobody thinks you did anything wrong," she said.

"Forty-one people think something."

She winced. "They think you're unstable. That's the word that keeps coming up. I have parents asking if you should be alone with their children."

"Because I took my ring off when my husband didn't deny getting another woman pregnant."

"I know how it sounds."

"How does it sound?"

She folded her hands. "I think the kindest thing might be a short leave. A week or two. Until it blows over."

"If I go home for two weeks, it means they were right."

"Renee."

"I've taught at this school for nine years. I've never missed a parent conference." I stood up. "I'm going to go teach spelling."

I did.

Twenty-two third graders sat on the carpet while I wrote this week's words on the board.

Brave. Bridge. Brought.

At nine-fifteen the classroom door opened without a knock.

A woman I knew from Stacy's Pilates pictures came in, in leggings and big sunglasses she didn't take off.

She pointed at her daughter on the carpet.

"Get your backpack, baby. You're switching classes."

Her daughter was seven and the best speller I had.

She looked at me with her mouth open.

"Mom, we're doing B-words."

"Now."

Twenty-one other kids watched the girl drag her backpack to the door.

The woman looked me up and down.

"Some of us," she said, "don't want our kids around that kind of drama."

I uncapped a new marker.

"Then you should have a word with the woman who brought a pregnancy test to a bake sale," I said. Then I looked at her daughter. "Sweetheart, you got a hundred on Friday. I'll send it home."
