Chapter 15: Come Alone
The night before the gala, Malcolm did not sleep in the bed.
He sat on the edge of it with his head in his hands and listened to the house.
Perrin was asleep beside him, curled on his side, one hand open on the pillow.
It was two in the morning, and the board dinner was in nineteen hours.
Malcolm had spent the evening on the phone with the company's lawyer.
The numbers were as bad as he had feared.
Desmond had been buying quietly for a year, a few percent at a time, through three shell names and a family trust.
Malcolm could hold the chair.
He might hold it by a single vote.
He might lose it.
And if he lost it, the paper would print what Desmond wanted, and Perrin would be the face on the front.
Malcolm had thought about that for hours.
He had thought of the man in the fleece vest, and the phones held up in the café, and the pale face of a boy who almost went little in front of a crowd.
