Chapter 17: The Press Hotel
The Press Hotel ballroom held eighty people, a string quartet and more candles than Perrin had ever seen in one place.
He stopped inside the doorway.
Malcolm's hand rested at the small of his back, warm through the navy wool.
"Breathe," Malcolm said quietly.
"I'm breathing," Perrin said.
"You're holding your breath."
"I'm holding my breath in a very dignified way."
Malcolm's mouth twitched.
Heads had turned.
Perrin felt every one of the eyes, sliding over his sleeves, his new shoes, the tie he had spent twenty minutes choosing.
It was dark green, the color of the apron.
He had chosen one for Malcolm, too, a deep blue silk, and watched him put it on without a word.
"Shall we?" Malcolm said.
"Yes," Perrin whispered, and Malcolm led him in.
It was easier than he had feared, at first.
