Chapter 17: Forty Thousand
The boat was exactly where Magnus had left it, which was the trouble with boats.
It sat in its slip in the Astoria fog, thirty-two feet of gray-painted wood.
The harbor lapped at its hull.
His father had built the cabin himself.
Magnus had labeled every cupboard in it the winter after the funeral.
There had been nothing else to do with his hands.
FLARES. COFFEE. CHARTS.
He stood on the dock with a cardboard folder under his arm.
He looked at the labels, and he did not go in.
At nine the buyer arrived.
She was a woman in her thirties, with a thermos and a deckhand.
She had the weathered face of someone who had wanted a boat since she was ten.
"Dr. Aldahl?"
"Yes."
"I'm sorry about your father."
"Thank you."
"He was a legend on this dock. They say he could hear a bad engine from the next county."
"Yes," said Magnus, because it was true.
She went aboard.
She opened the cupboards one at a time and read the labels aloud, FLARES, COFFEE, CHARTS, with her eyebrows going up.
