Chapter 20: Closing Costs
The title company called on Monday with a number, and the number was fourteen thousand three hundred dollars.
"Closing costs," Winifred explained over the phone. "They are due on the day, and they are not on the list."
"What list?" said Teddy.
"The list you didn't make."
Teddy sat down on a crate of terracotta pots.
He had sixty-one thousand in the down payment.
Magnus had the rest.
Between them they had precisely one hundred and seventy-two thousand dollars and no money for the fee.
"We could sell the van," he said.
"It's Poppy's van."
"She'd understand."
"I'd understand," said Poppy, from behind the counter, "and then I'd murder you. Sit still. I have a plan."
She went to the chalkboard and rubbed out the day's specials.
She wrote, in her best capitals, GERALD'S BABIES. SATURDAY. ALL PROCEEDS TO THE DUPLEX.
"Poppy, who's Gerald's babies?"
"Your boyfriend's fern."
"He doesn't know you know about Gerald."
"The whole street knows about Gerald," said Poppy. "You told a florist. A florist."
