Chapter 23: Housewarming
Forty-two people fit into a duplex built for four, if nobody minds the cat.
The housewarming was on the second Saturday of January, and it began with a casserole fight.
"It goes in the oven," said the tech.
"It goes on the table," said the old woman with the seed packet.
"It has cheese on it, it goes in the oven."
"It has dignity, it goes on the table."
Teddy stood in the new open living room, which had been two living rooms until the middle wall came down, and thought that if he lived to be a hundred he would not see anything better than this.
Every surface held a plant.
Half the guests had brought their Gerald Jr. along as a gift, still wearing its strip of tape, and set it down wherever there was room.
The balcony doors were open to the cold, and the fairy lights glowed along the empty place where the railing used to be.
Magnus moved through the crowd in a white apron with a ladle in one hand, serving meatballs.
Every plate got a label.
