Chapter 14: Rodrigo's POV
Rodrigo's POV
The light was on in my father's study when I let myself into the house at three in the morning.
My mother sat behind the desk in her robe, with her glasses on the chain and a cup of tea she had not touched.
She did not look surprised.
I started the voice recorder on my phone in my pocket, the way Alma had told me to, and put the phone on the arm of the leather chair.
"Mamá. Where does the money in the envelopes come from?"
"Sit down, mijo."
"Where does it come from?"
"Her father's trust," my mother said.
She said it so calmly that for a moment I didn't understand I had been answered.
"You knew."
"I arranged it." She took off her glasses and folded them. "A man like Anselmo Tejeda leaves six hundred thousand dollars to a girl of twenty-two who works at a dentist's front desk. Do you know what that girl would have done with it?"
"It was hers."
"She would have bought a car. She would have bought shoes and a vacation and a lease on some little place, and she would have left it all to a man who fixes tires."
"Her father fixed tires."
"Her father is dead, Rodrigo. Her husband is alive, and he is the heir to the Aldama name, and I made certain that money went where it would be used."
"Used by you."
"Used for you." She leaned forward. "The household was lean when your father died. You know that. I carried this family on my own back for eleven years. Thirty-one payments of five thousand dollars were the difference between the Foundation staying open and closing it."
I stared at her.
"You paid the Foundation with my wife's inheritance."
"With your daughter's inheritance. I merely held it in trust for her, early."
