Chapter 9: Rafferty's Ledger

Rafferty's POV

I let her sleep until eight.

Then I put on a shirt with all its buttons and went down to the lobby to find out who had photographed my bedroom.

The head of building security was a stocky man who had worked for my father.

He watched the photograph twice on my phone and shook his head.

"Long lens, sir. A big one. It was shot from across the street, from a roof or a high window."

"Which building?"

"I'll have it by noon."

He had it by ten.

The office tower across Market Street had a rooftop terrace that rented by the night.

Someone had paid cash for it on Friday, for exactly one evening.

The booking was under a company called Larkin Street Holdings.

I had never heard of it.

I had been so happy for four hours that I had forgotten to close the blinds.

That was how careless it made me.

I called my private lawyer from the car.

He is a quiet, exact man, and he does not ask why.

"Larkin Street Holdings," I said. "Find out who owns it, and find out who else it owns."

"That will take a few days."

"Make it two."

"Mr. Gage, the Gilded Room's liquor license is also under a holding company."
