Chapter 20: Refusal
Gordon sighed.
It was the sigh of a man who has asked nicely too many times.
"Kirk," he said. "Roll him back thirty days. Before the incinerator line. Before any of this."
"Restore point, thirty days," Vaneck said. "Yes, sir."
He lifted the clear cover on the fob with his thumb.
"No," Micah said, and ran.
Two of Vaneck's men caught him by the arms at the edge of the stage.
He kicked one in the knee, wrenched an elbow free and got three more steps before a baton cracked across his shoulder.
He dropped to his knees on the stage floor.
"Ansel!"
Ansel turned his head.
His grey-gold eyes were wide, and for an instant Micah saw the whole thing go across his face, the fear and then the choice.
"I'm still saying no," Ansel said, to the room, to Gordon and to the camera.
