Chapter 18: Balance Due
I read Andrea's line until the letters stopped looking like words.
Then I handed the phone back across the desk.
"Does your wife know you have these?"
"Not yet."
"Why not take them to Jason yourself?"
He laughed without any fun in it.
"Jason? He'd look at me, then he'd call his mother, and his mother would call it a misunderstanding."
He put the phone away.
"He'd believe Andrea over me. He'd believe her over you. He's been doing it for two years."
"So what do you want me to do with them?"
"Nothing yet."
He stood up and pushed the chair back in, neatly.
"I'll be at the gala. Head table, end seat. If anybody in that room ever asks the right question, I'll answer it."
He left his coffee on my desk, untouched.
My assistant waited until the bakery bell rang downstairs.
"Who was that?"
"Family," I said.
Then I drank his coffee too.
Twelve days later, on the Monday before the gala, I was at the Mill at nine in the morning with a clipboard and a headset.
