Chapter 19: The Note
"It's eleven o'clock," I said.
"I know what time it is."
"Where are you?"
"Your street. The one with the red door."
I went to the front window.
His truck was parked at the curb, lights off.
He was sitting behind the wheel with the phone at his ear, looking at my house.
"Come in," I said.
He came up the walk slowly.
He was in a golf jacket and the same reading glasses, pushed up on his forehead.
I'd never seen him anywhere but his own house or his own showroom.
He looked smaller on my porch.
"Pamela thinks I'm at the Dublin store checking the alarm," he said.
"Does the alarm need checking?"
"No."
I put on coffee.
He sat at my kitchen table and looked around.
At the fridge, covered in Max's spelling tests and dinosaur drawings.
At the pickup schedule on the whiteboard in my handwriting.
At the lunch box drying upside down by the sink.
"He packs that every night?" he asked.
