Chapter 11: The Email

Leah's POV

Bruce didn't eat the soup.

He sat at the kitchen table with his spoon in his hand and his eyes on the lamp.

I had told him about the district.

The principal had handled it in two phone calls, and the complaint was gone by noon.

He had said "Good" and nothing else.

"Are you sick?" I asked.

"No."

"Is it your hand?"

"No."

"Bruce. You look terrible."

He put the spoon down.

"I went to see Travis today."

My stomach dropped. "Why?"

"The complaint came from his lawyer's office. I wanted it pulled."

"And?"

"He wouldn't."

"That's all?"

He didn't answer.

My phone rang on the counter, and I almost let it go.

It was Kelsey.

I put it on speaker without thinking, because I thought she was calling to apologize again.

"Leah?" Her voice was thick. "Are you alone?"

"I'm with Bruce."

"Good. That's good."

She breathed in.

"I need to tell you something, and I can only say it once."

"Kelsey, what is it?"

"Travis called me this afternoon. He told me what he said to Bruce."

She hiccuped.

"He was laughing. He said, 'He finally knows.'"

I looked at Bruce.

He was looking at the table.

"Knows what?" I said.

"The email." Kelsey was crying again. "Three years ago."

"What email?"

"You were in the shower at your old apartment. Travis was on your laptop, and he made me stand in the hall."

She gulped air.

"He typed something. He said it was a joke."

"What kind of joke?"

"He was answering somebody. I didn't see who. He said you'd thank him later."

My hands had gone cold.

"Why are you telling me this now?"

"Because he's marrying Whitney," Kelsey whispered, "and I watched him write that, and I did nothing then, either."
