Chapter 22: Speak Now

Leah's POV

The door shut behind me with a soft click, and two hundred heads turned.

I walked out beside the altar in my green dress and stopped at the top of the steps.

Nobody said anything.

The pastor's mouth was open.

"Sorry I'm late," I said. "I'm the guest from page six."

A laugh broke out somewhere in the middle pews and was swallowed.

Dolores rose from the front row so fast her pearls swung.

"Security," she said, in a voice made for hallways.

"Mom," Travis said.

"Get her out. Now."

At the back of the church, the two men from the guest table started down the center aisle.

They had gone six rows when Kelsey pressed a key.

The slideshow stopped on a picture of Travis in a christening gown.

The screen went black.

Then a kitchen came out of the speakers, with a refrigerator hum and a spoon against a cup.

"Whitney walks in at one-twenty," said Dolores's voice, bored and crisp.

"Cream dress, the ring on her left hand, where the nurse can see it."

The security men stopped walking.

"Kelsey will go to her. Kelsey has never said no to Whitney in her life."

"Turn that off!" Dolores screamed.

Nobody moved.

"She will love the church more. Put the forty-one thousand toward the deposit on your real wedding, and don't tell Whitney where it came from."

A low sound went through the nave.

Two hundred phones came up.

At the laptop, Kelsey sat with her hands flat on the table, crying without a sound.
