Hettie's POV
The first grand arrival was the piano tuner.
Roderick had hired him before deciding to terrify the household.
The man carried a leather bag and looked disappointed by the reception.
Elspeth pointed him toward the music room.
"You may hear some shouting," she said.
"I've tuned through worse," he replied.
Agnes sat beside me on the hall bench.
She kept looking at the door and then at my face.
"We could still leave," she whispered.
"You can," I told her.
She shook her head immediately.
I took her hand because she'd finally offered me a choice without attaching her fear to it.
Lucan stood near the entrance in his plain coat.
I straightened the collar he'd folded under at the back.
He turned his head and kissed the inside of my wrist before I let go.
Outside, the first villagers had reached the gate together.
