Chapter 17: White Dress, Early
On Saturday at half past two something small hit the cottage door at a run.
I opened it and Posy came in under my arm.
She wore a white dress with a ribbon at the waist and carried a basket of rose petals in one fist.
"Shut it," she whispered. "Shut it, shut it."
I shut it.
She went straight under the table and sat there with her knees pulled up, and the petals spilled across the floor.
Nolan was at the stove with a pan in his hand.
He put it down and stood very still.
The lawyer's letter said six feet, and he stayed at the far side of the room.
"I'm not supposed to be here," Posy said from under the table. "Mommy said if I talk to Nolan I can't go in the lake again."
"You're allowed to be scared," I said, and I got down on the floor beside her.
"I'm not scared. I'm in trouble." She looked at the petals. "I have to throw these at four o'clock and Daddy has to say yes. Mommy practiced it with me four times."
"Say yes to what?"
"To being married again. But he already is married, he was married to her before, so I don't know why he has to say it twice."
She put her chin on her knees.
"Mommy cried in the car," she said. "She doesn't cry. She said something to the mirror, and it was a word I'm not allowed to say."
Across the room Nolan lowered himself to the floor, slowly, until he was sitting with his back against the cabinets.
He stayed there with his hands open on his knees.
Posy peered at him sideways with her green eye, and I watched him not move.
