Chapter 18: The Forger

Pemberton Homes had its offices on the top two floors of a glass building in Grand Rapids.

I walked in on Monday at nine with Bea beside me and my camera bag over my shoulder.

My phone buzzed in the elevator.

It was Nolan.

Done. The tech swabbed Posy's cheek first. She held my hand the whole time and asked if it tickled. Then she asked me to come to her birthday.

I read it twice and put the phone away.

The office manager met us at the top.

She was a woman in her fifties in a gray cardigan, and she twisted her hands together as she walked us down the hall.

"I should have said something sooner," she said. "I knew the notice looked wrong on the day. I only didn't know what to do about it."

"Tell me what you saw."

"The night before it went up on your door, Mrs. Pemberton came here after hours." She stopped at a glass door. "Heath's former wife. She said Mr. Heath had asked her to type up a notice for a property of his."

"Did he?"

"He didn't. She sat at my own desk and wrote his name at the bottom herself, copying a lease amendment he signed last year." The manager's voice shook. "She had the pen ready, and she did it three times to get it right. I watched her."

I looked at Bea.

Bea had her phone out and was recording with her eyebrows up.

"Would you say that in front of the family?" I asked.

"Yes," said the manager. "That's why I called."

She opened the glass door.

A long table stood in the room, with Heath's father at the head and the company's lawyer at his elbow.

Heath sat at the far end in a plain gray shirt.
