Norma went into the cardiac unit first, and she stayed fifteen minutes.
I counted them on the clock above the vending machines, because counting was what my hands wanted to do.
Maxwell sat beside me with his elbows on his knees.
He had not said a word about the slap, only brought me a cold can of ginger ale to hold against my cheek.
"You don't have to go in," he said.
"I know."
"I'm only saying the door works from both sides."
"That's why I'm going."
When Norma came out, she walked past me.
A nurse waved me through, and I pushed open the door to bay six.
Calvin looked smaller than he had on the dock.
A monitor drew his heartbeat in green, and a clear line ran into the back of his hand.
The shadows under his eyes had gone purple.
He tried to sit up, and I said, "Stay down," before I could stop myself.
He stayed down.
"You came," he said.
"I came to see you breathing. That's all."
"That's more than I earned."
