Chapter 24: Years Later
The table on the town landing was set for eight, and Matthias had counted the chairs three times.
It was the ninth of October, bright and cold, with the harbor lying flat and blue under a hard sky.
He had carried the table down from the boatyard himself, with the folding chairs and a crate of mismatched mugs.
The tide was beginning to go out.
On the far side of the water the twin lights of Thacher Island stood white against the sea.
Ezra arrived first, sixty-three and retired, in his tweed coat, with a bag of peppermints.
"You've put the fork on the wrong side," he said.
"It's the only side I know."
"That's my point."
Next came the Keeper's daughter, with her two children at her heels.
The girl was sixteen and the young man nineteen.
They had sailed Half Measures every summer since the first June she floated, and they called Matthias Doc.
He had never corrected them.
He kept his own house now, a white cottage on Granite Street, five minutes from hers.
