Chapter 15: Why Now
Stewart read the rest of the emails at the kitchen island until two in the morning.
I sat across from him with a mug of tea going cold and did not say anything.
Every few minutes he made a small sound in his throat.
At half past two he closed the laptop.
"She planned it before she ever called him a neurologist," he said.
"I know."
"She was counting the days to Freddie's birthday in these, Hallie. She was counting before she ever left."
His voice broke on the last word.
I came around the island and took his face in both hands.
He closed his eyes and leaned his forehead against mine, and we stayed like that, breathing, until the radiator ticked.
"I'm going to read the trust," he said. "My grandfather's. I've never read past the first page."
"Then we read it in the morning."
"We?"
"I'm on the list of things you've decided not to do alone," I said.
He laughed, once, wet and unsteady, and kissed me.
