Chapter 16: The Court's Doctor
The court's evaluator had a small office with a rug, a low table and a basket of felt-tipped markers.
She was a woman of about sixty in a cardigan, with a plain gray braid and no clipboard in sight.
I liked her at once, because she sat on the floor.
"I'll see Freddie alone," she told Stewart at the door. "Mr. Acheson, you can wait with Ms. Tennant."
"He won't go in without her," Stewart said.
"I know. I read the file." She smiled at me. "Where would be useful, Ms. Tennant?"
"The hall bench, with the door open six inches," I said. "He'll check."
"Then that's where you'll be."
Freddie stood on the threshold with his ear defenders on and the scarf in his fist.
He looked at the evaluator.
He looked at the rug.
Then he looked at me, and I held up my wrist and tapped the watch.
He turned and walked into the room on his own four stiff steps.
