Chapter 9: The Red Coat
The Harborview waiting room had thirty chairs, and twenty-two were full.
Parents sat with their children on their laps, holding coats and juice boxes and folders of test results.
A small girl in a pink cast played with a plastic giraffe on the carpet.
I walked in with my court shoes wet and stopped in the center of the room.
The receptionist looked up and went still.
"Ms. Tennant," she said. "Dr. Whitlow isn't seeing"
"I'm not here to see him."
I turned around to face the chairs.
"Excuse me," I said, and every head came up.
My voice shook once and then held.
"My name is Hallie Tennant. I'm Dr. Whitlow's wife. I'm sorry to interrupt, and I'll be very short."
A mother near the window pulled her son closer.
"I paid for every year of his training, and I gave up my own career so he could take this post."
Nobody spoke.
"This afternoon he put a hospital file about me in front of a judge. There was no hospital."
A man in the back row set down his phone.
"I don't know what he'll write about your child," I said. "I'm only telling you what he wrote about me. If a doctor will sign a paper like that about his own wife, ask him what else he signs."
