Chapter 12: College Night
By seven on Thursday, the gym was full.
Parents filled the bleachers and the folding chairs on the floor, and the overflow stood against the back wall holding paper cups of cider.
Half of them had my article folded in their coat pockets.
At the front, under the basketball hoop, someone had set a long table with a white cloth and a row of microphones.
Two chairs stood on either side of the principal's seat.
My mom sat in the front row in her good blue cardigan, with her hands in her lap, because she had traded two shifts to be there.
Hallie sat one row behind her.
She had saved me a seat, and I had said, "I'll be up front," and she had nodded and squeezed my arm.
I had not slept.
Eliot stood by the door to the locker rooms with a notebook, in his black peacoat.
As I walked past him I stopped.
"You were right," I said, very low.
He looked at me.
He didn't say anything, and he didn't smile.
He just nodded once, and his hand tightened on the notebook, and that was enough.
I sat down in the left-hand chair.
Tate sat down in the right-hand one, in a blazer that didn't fit him, with his father's hand still on his shoulder until the principal cleared his throat.
The principal tapped the microphone.
"Good evening. Before we begin College Night, we're going to address something that has been on this community's mind. Parents may submit questions on the cards in front of you. We'll keep it civil."
The first card was read by the principal himself.
