Chapter 13: The Gate

Sam drove me to Greenwich the next afternoon, straight off his shift, with a coffee he never drank.

I had not slept.

I had looked at the picture of a girl in a yellow raincoat until my eyes burned.

"Before we get there," he said on the highway, "I need to ask one thing, and you can tell me it's none of my business."

"Ask."

"Are you still his wife?"

I looked at the side of his face.

"My papers were signed on Monday," I said. "My friend's lawyer filed them Tuesday in Providence family court. Bancroft was served on the porch, and he took them from the process server without a word."

Sam's hands tightened on the wheel.

"I thought it was only talk," he said. "The rain, the ring. I thought you might change your mind."

"I don't change my mind about him."

He nodded once and kept his eyes on the road.

His shoulders came down an inch.

I noticed it, and I told myself it was the traffic.

Margo's daughter went to a small private school behind a stone wall, with a pickup line of white SUVs.

We parked across the street.

At three-fifteen the doors opened, and children came out in a wave of red backpacks.

I knew her before I could see her face.

She came down the steps last, holding a paper windmill, with her coat unzipped and her auburn hair falling out of its clip.

She stopped at the bottom to pick something off the ground and put it in her pocket.

My hand was flat against the window.

"That's her," I said.

"I know," Sam said quietly. "I can see."

Margo got out of a cream SUV at the curb and opened her arms.

The girl ran at her.

Margo lifted her and spun her once, laughing.
