Chapter 21: The Offer

Sam's POV

At six in the morning I came out of the clinic's side door after a double shift.

A long black car was idling beside mine.

The rear window slid down.

"Dr. Burdick," Odile Huntington said. "Do get in. It's cold."

I thought about it.

Then I got into my own driver's seat and left the door open, so the dome light stayed on.

She looked at me for a long moment.

She was in a camel coat and pearls, with her hair in its knot.

She didn't look like a woman who had lost half her life in one weekend.

She looked tired, but she looked in charge.

She stepped out of her car and into the passenger seat of mine, and shut the door.

"I'm not going to waste your time," she said. "You are a very good doctor. I've looked into your file."

"That's flattering."

"Your clinic runs at a loss. The Huntington Foundation endows a wing at Rhode Island Hospital each year."

"They need a chief of obstetrics. It is a very large salary, and a small staff of your own choosing."

I put my phone in the cup holder, screen down.

I had pressed record when she shut the door.

"What would I do for it?"

"Nothing very much. You would tell the investigator that your concern about Mrs. Salisbury's chart was a misunderstanding."

She turned her head.

"The thin wall was visible on an early scan, and you misread the later ones. That is a small thing."

"And if I don't?"

"Then I tell your board something else."

She said it pleasantly.

"That you began a physical relationship with a pregnant patient who was still legally married. That you did it in your own apartment. Doctors lose their licenses over less."
