Chapter 29: Visiting Hours

The county holding room had a steel bench, a glass partition, and a phone on a cord.

Bancroft was brought in on Monday afternoon in a gray jumpsuit.

He sat down and picked up the phone before I had touched mine.

I had not planned to come.

He had sent the request through his lawyer four times, and the fourth time the lawyer wrote that Bancroft had stopped eating.

I picked up the receiver.

"You came," he said.

"I came to tell you something."

"Anything. Tillie, anything."

He pressed his palm flat on the glass.

His cuffs had left red marks on his wrists, and he had not shaved.

"I signed everything this morning," he said. "The shares, the house, the boat. They're in a trust for Posy. You and Margo are the trustees."

"Your lawyer told me."

"I didn't ask for anything back."

"I know. That's why I'm here, and not because of the money." I held the receiver in both hands. "The prosecutor wants your statement against your mother. Give it all of it, and don't argue about what you get."

"I'll give it. Tillie, I'll say anything on any stand." His eyes were wet. "But I need to hear it from you. Do you forgive me?"

I thought about it, because he deserved a real answer.

"No."

He flinched.

"Maybe someday," he said. "If I earn it. If I do every single thing."

"Maybe someday I won't think about you. That's the most you can earn."

"I did it for you," he said.
