Chapter 40: The Voice on the Phone
"That's her," Posy whispered again, as if I might have missed it.
"I know," I said. "Stay down."
The retired agent was already on her feet.
"Now," she said, very softly.
The young detective went out through the dock door first, low and fast.
The broad officer followed with her light off.
I got up out of the chair in four separate movements and went after them as far as the top of the dock steps.
Nobody told me not to.
Across the lot, the flashlight inside the trailer swung toward the door.
The temp stood on the old trailer's floor with the gray case open on the third shelf.
In his left hand was a glass ampoule with a blank white label.
In his right hand was one of ours.
He had the two of them held side by side.
"Police," the detective said. "Put them down. Slowly."
The temp did not put them down.
He looked straight past the officers at me, standing in the dock light with my hand under my belly.
