Chapter 12: Maud Speaks
"Put the knife down, Sabine," I said.
My voice was shaking, and I hated it.
She smiled and pressed the blade a little tighter.
A line of red welled up on Maud's neck.
The one hundred and thirty-six had stopped moving.
They stood in the square with babies on their hips and pups clinging to their legs, and every one of them was looking at Sabine.
Maud Ferris was sixty-eight years old and came up to Sabine's chin.
She did not look afraid.
She looked annoyed.
"Sabine Orrin," Maud said clearly. "I delivered you."
"Be quiet."
"Fourteen hours in your mother's bed on the hottest night of that summer. I pulled you out by the foot." She spoke to the square, not to Sabine. "You came out silent and sly, with your eyes open, looking around. I told your mother that one was going to watch everybody. I never knew how right I was."
Somebody in the crowd laughed in disbelief.
"Shut her up," Sabine said to nobody.
"I know every wolf here by the day they were born," Maud said, louder. "I know every pup on this square. I delivered half of those four hundred that burned and handed them to their mothers. You gave them water and told them to cry that the Alpha was dead."
A low sound rose from the crowd, from the old men, from the women with the babies.
It was not a shout.
It was worse.
Sabine looked around.
For the first time I saw her face lose its smile.
"He needed a Luna who obeyed," she said. "I was going to be Luna. I was going to hold this pack together, after."
"After what?" an old woman called from the back. "After you killed my grandsons?"
