Chapter 8: Parley at the Gate
I walked to Moonwatch's east gate alone, as ordered.
The sun was coming up red over the river.
Behind me, a quarter mile back in the long grass, Corvin was leading forty riders toward the old tannery and the drain.
I had ten minutes to buy them.
The gate stood open.
On the wall above it, in rows, stood one hundred and thirty-seven people.
I counted them again without meaning to.
Old men in nightshirts. Mothers with babies in their arms. Pups in a line along the stones with their small faces turned down at me.
Maud Ferris stood at the end of the row with a man's hand on her collar.
She saw me, and she shook her head hard.
*Don't.*
I kept walking.
"There she is," a warm voice said.
My legs stopped working.
Joss came out onto the wall above the gate with the sun behind him and a hand raised to the crowd.
He wore Dawn Watch grey, clean and pressed.
His golden hair was brushed back and his signet ring flashed on his hand.
There was no soot on him, and no burn.
He looked rested.
"My love," Joss said, and smiled down at me.
I had loved that smile for two years.
The people of Moonwatch had filled every street inside the gate.
They stared up at him.
A woman near the front started to cry.
"He lives," somebody whispered. "The Alpha lives."
"I do," Joss said, loud and kind. "And so do you. Do you know why?"
He looked out over the crowd.
"Because four hundred of my warriors stood in Redcliff and did not break. I asked them for the one thing a pack asks of its Alpha. I asked them to prove they were mine, to the end."
