Chapter 17: Ronan's POV
Ronan's POV
The tracker sat on a hay bale in my stable with his shaved head in his hands.
He was twenty-two, and he had not slept in two days.
I had found him at the back door that afternoon, scratching.
He had begged me:
"Alpha. They'll kill me."
Now Eira stood in the lantern light, and he flinched from her.
"You," he said. "You're the one I threw it at."
"Which of us were you aiming for?" she asked.
Her voice was flat and calm.
I knew that voice.
It was the one she used when she was holding herself together with both hands.
"The Alpha's head," he said. "The Beta handed me the knife on the steps of the Blackpine box. He said whoever fell, the Compact would blame the rogues, and the Truce would hand us the Games."
I felt my wolf lift his head.
"The Beta," I said.
"He's been saying you were rotten since the Feast, Alpha. Three years. He said you'd shame us all, and he only needed you gone before the Final."
"And the purse?"
The tracker looked at his boots.
"Miss Ravenscroft gave it to me the night before. She said to keep it in my boot until someone found it. I thought it was only for show."
"Calista," Eira said.
"She said the rogue girl had to be shut out of the Games. Any way."
Eira's knuckles had gone white around her braid.
"They opened my cell last night," the tracker said. "I heard the key. One of the Beta's men said, Walk. When I got to the corner another man was waiting with a rope."
"How did you get away?"
