Chapter 6: Ask Your Mate

I put my tongue to the dregs in Nan's palm.

It was bitter, with a green, earthy bite, and underneath it was honey, hiding it.

I knew that taste.

I had drunk it every night for a year, and I had called it sweet.

"What is it?" I said.

"Forgetting root." Nan closed her fist. "The old wolves use it for a grief too heavy to carry. It wipes the past while it is in the blood."

My mouth went dry.

"While it's in the blood."

"A day without it and the edges come back. A week without it, and everything does."

"And if you take it every night?"

"Then nothing comes back at all."

I stared at her.

"A year," I said.

"Aye."

"He fed it to me for a year."

"I made the first dose," Nan said. Her voice was hoarse. "I'll answer for that. A woman half dead on a bed, screaming for a child in her sleep. I thought it was a mercy."

"The first dose."

"It is only meant to last a season. After that it fades on its own, and the woman wakes up and chooses." Nan's eyes were wet. "That was the whole point of it. You were meant to choose."

The room tilted.

"He kept making it," I said. "After the season."

"I don't make it any longer," Nan said. "I haven't for ten months. I told him to stop. Ask your mate where he gets it."

I stood up so fast the chair fell over.
